What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a holistic science and mind-body healing system originating in India over 5,000 years ago. Translated from Sanskrit as the "Science of Life" or the "Art of Being," Ayurveda does more than treat illness. It is a profoundly curative and preventative system of medicine with comprehensive tools for understanding ourselves within the laws of nature to help us achieve our full vitality and potential.
Today, Ayurveda remains as relevant as ever as we seek a better understanding of our health and well-being, returning to the wisdom and healing power of mother earth.
Ayurveda believes that each individual and all of nature is comprised of five fundamental elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These elements interact with one another, producing energies or forces of nature known as the three Doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Vata Dosha = Space + Air
Pitta Dosha = Fire + Water
Kapha Dosha = Water + Earth
These Doshas manifest in every area of our mind and body, including our physical build, digestive tendancies, mental disposition, and skin qualities. While we typically show dominance in one or two Doshas, all three exist within us, offering endless combinations and proportions of these natural energies.
For this reason, Ayurveda teaches us that each individual is truly unique, and wellness recommendations are most effective when tailored to a person's distinctive Doshic combination.
When balanced, all three Doshas offer their own representation of health and beauty. No one Dosha is superior to another. When out of balance, however, the Doshas can create negative characteristics that can lead to unhealthy functioning of the mind and body. Learning how to balance your Dosha is the key to longevity and vitality.
